Bottom line

The polymath's laser: one Er:YAG plus one Nd:YAG source, and from those two wavelengths Fotona protocol-engineered an absurd menu — Fotona4D facial "lifting," TightSculpting body work, NightLase snoring, LipLase, hair removal, vascular, full resurfacing. Per-treatment economics are excellent (zero consumables) and the European engineering is real. Honest caveats: "tightening" results are technique-dependent and subtler than the before/afters imply, US brand awareness lags Sciton badly, and gray-market EU imports muddy the used market. Best value-per-dollar multi-platform in the category if you'll actually train on the protocols.

The science

Two wavelengths: 2940nm Er:YAG (peak water absorption — ablates skin with micron precision, or in SMOOTH non-ablative mode delivers gentle bulk heating without breaking the surface) and 1064nm Nd:YAG (penetrates deep, heating dermis, vessels, follicles). Fotona4D stacks four passes — SmoothLiftin (intraoral Er:YAG heating of the nasolabial area from inside the mouth), FRAC3 (fractional Nd:YAG), PIANO (ultra-long Nd:YAG pulse for bulk deep heating) and SupErficial (a feather-light Er:YAG polish). TightSculpting pairs PIANO deep heating with SMOOTH surface heating for off-face tightening. Same box does true ablative resurfacing, hair removal and vascular lesions.

Patented tech

VSP (Variable Square Pulse) and the SMOOTH pulse-train mode are the genuine proprietary pieces — SMOOTH delivers Er:YAG energy in stacked sub-ablative bursts so a normally ablative wavelength becomes a non-ablative heater; ASP adaptive pulse control governs the Nd:YAG side.
