Bottom line

The value-engineered Swiss Army knife — the widest module catalog in the category (65+ claimed indications, ~20 handpieces) at meaningfully lower entry price than Lumenis or Candela, with near-zero per-treatment consumables. Individual modules are rarely best-in-class: ClearLift is genuinely differentiated no-downtime offering, but the AFT IPL trails M22/Nordlys on vascular refinement and the Q-switched module trails dedicated picos on tattoos. Alma has moved flagship attention to the newer Alma Harmony (2023), so XL Pro is late-lifecycle — great for used buyers, a pause for new buyers. Buy it to launch a broad menu on a constrained budget; buy modules only for services you'll actually sell.

Overview

How it works

The science

Multi-application platform accepting interchangeable handpieces: AFT pulsed-light modules (Dye-VL 500-600nm vascular/pigment, SSR photorejuvenation, SHR hair removal), ClearLift (Q-switched 1064/532nm fractional delivered non-ablatively — the "lunchtime facelift"), iPixel Er:YAG 2940nm ablative fractional, ClearSkin (1540nm Er:Glass with cooling/vacuum for acne), long-pulse Nd:YAG for veins, Q-switched Nd:YAG for tattoos and pigment. One chassis can run photofacials, hair removal, acne, vascular, tattoo, and light resurfacing.

Patented tech

AFT (Advanced Fluorescence Technology) is Alma's improved IPL — a filter/fluorescent coating converting otherwise-wasted short wavelengths into usable spectrum with equalized square pulses; an efficiency-and-safety upgrade rather than different physics. ClearLift's fractional Q-switched delivery under intact epidermis is the platform's most distinctive module.

Origin

Alma Lasers, Caesarea, Israel (Sisram Medical/Fosun); US ops Buffalo Grove, IL.

FDA & regulatory status

Cleared via 510(k)

What it's actually cleared for:

Multi-application platform cleared for pigmented/vascular lesions, hair removal and skin resurfacing

510(k) numbers

Regulatory data is compiled from public FDA 510(k) records and may lag recent clearances. Always confirm status with the manufacturer before purchase.

Treatment economics

What practices charge

AFT photofacials $250-450; ClearLift $300-600 (packaged 3-4 for $900-1,800, popular in memberships); iPixel resurfacing $400-900; LHR $100-350/area; tattoo removal $200-500 by size. Economics favor stacking modest-ticket treatments and combination protocols.

Consumables & recurring cost

Effectively consumable-free per treatment; costs are handpiece refurbishment as modules age (AFT handpieces have finite flash life, ~$1,500-3,500 to refurbish) plus water/filters. Annual reality ~$1,000-4,000, among the lowest in class.

Ideal for

Best-fit practice

The startup or budget-conscious medspa building a full menu with one purchase, or price-sensitive markets where $250-450 treatments move volume. Handles a wider Fitzpatrick range than pure IPL platforms thanks to ClearLift and Nd:YAG. Established practices with strong single-service demand should buy category leaders instead.

Compliance

Medical director & delegation

Class II prescription platform; most modules delegable under standard state rules, but iPixel Er:YAG is ablative — several states restrict ablative resurfacing to physicians/mid-levels; check before staffing that module with aestheticians.

Contraindications & screening

Standard energy screening: active tan, pregnancy, photosensitizers, isotretinoin history, active infection/herpes in zone, keloid tendency, pigment-risk counseling for IV-VI on light-based modules; module-specific screens apply.

Ownership

Warranty & service

1-year standard; Alma US service adequate but rated below Lumenis/Candela for parts speed; extended ~$6,000-12,000/year; third-party service common out of warranty.

Resale & used market

Heavily traded — XL Pro units ~$20-50k by year and module count, drifting down as the new Alma Harmony supersedes it. Module completeness drives value more than chassis year.
